In a Year With 13 Moons...

Many people understandable get confused as to which spiritual principals apply to which moon phase and cycle in a year with 13 moons...

Many Nature-based faith systems dedicate their spiritual teachings to each moon phase and cycle according to what is taking place during the respective times of year in Nature.  Generally the cycles are counted the same -- they begin at the first full moon following the winter solstice.  With the change in calendars throughout history and the acceptance of the Judeo-Christian calendar that is currently in use in North America, some shifting has taken place in how the counting is done.

Once upon a time, in some cultures, when there where 13 moons between the winter solstices of one year and the next, the 13th moon was considered to be auspicious and mysterious and celebrated as a special occurrence.  With the shifting of traditions, as time went on, and with the induction of the current Judeo-Christian calendar, what constituted as a "month" needed to be taken into consideration along with how the 13 moons fell throughout the year.

Many people now believe in the "Blue Moon" teaching as the coming together of the ancient calendar and the modern -- a "Blue Moon" representing a 2nd full moon falling within the same Judeo-Christian month -- and has its own teachings.  The counting of moon phase teachings is paused, so to speak, for that special moon and then reinstated following, so that we still end up with the 12th teaching as the final moon phase of the year, with the "Blue Moon" teaching sometime during the year as it occurs.

Personally, I tend to go old-school.  I pay attention to Nature and the infinite changes She shares with us.  I pay attention to the original teachings that follow consecutively 13 moons...

According to the more ancient traditions, we would now be at the "Blood Moon" phase, rather than the "Harvest Moon" phase, as we have now had 10 full moons since the winter solstice.

What have you noticed that is different this year compared to most years at this time?  In the area where I live, we have experienced cold weather much earlier than usual.  The odd tree started changing their colours at their tops a little earlier than usual.  The bats, here, have begun migrating earlier.  Some forms of paranormal activity -- particularly "visits" from Spirit & Loved-Ones, which tend to occur more often once the colder weather in October sets in -- have begun to take place now in September and have been taking place for some weeks.

The Blood Moon teaching tends toward our ancestral communication.  We may receive visits form our Loved-Ones who have crossed over a little more easily than at other times of the year, whether by dream, a sign, in meditation, or manifest, etc.  We may find ourselves wishing for someone to cuddle with during the colder evenings, or family members to enjoy being around as we participate in the autumnal season and the getting-ready for the winter months.  We may find our thoughts drifting to our childhood memories, or we may even instictively make further efforts to over-coming family karma.  This is a special and magical time, when it can be easier for us to "connect" to our Tree-of-Life and its pull on us.  Our root systems are a predominant concern and our branching efforts become plentiful.

What have you noticed about this current moon phase?  Which dedication of teachings do you tend towards?  The wonderful thing about spirituality is that it is personal and cannot be dictated by others.  There is no wrong nor right for ALL, only our own beliefs and experiences.

During this moon and the next,
(whichever teachings you hold to)
